NEWS: 2011/2012 Recipients Announced

NEWS: Yoshie Yamamoto (Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan) was in Tokyo (and not Sendai) at the time of the quake and tsunami and has safely returned to San Diego. She will not return to Japan and will finish her third trimester in San Diego with full support of the board.

In memory of Chris Borton (Warren College graduate, class of 1988) a scholarship fund was established in 1996 to assist University of California San Diego students wishing to study abroad.

While at UCSD, Chris spent a year at the University of Göttingen in Germany through the Education Abroad Program, an experience that profoundly influenced the direction of his life. Together with his childhood experiences of living in different cultures and later studies and travels abroad, it made him the world citizen he was. His family and friends feel that Chris would be happy to have this kind of opportunity available to other deserving students.

The amount available is determined by the earnings from donations to the endowment fund. The criteria for selection were established by the trustees of the fund in conjunction with UC San Diego. The guiding principle is to further international understanding.

The fund was initiated by Mike Scanlin, one of Chris' closest friends from UCSD days. The fund's management is assisted by Mike's father Joe, who was a financial advisor to Chris.

Tax-deductible donations of cash should be mailed and made payable to:

Chris Borton Memorial Scholarship Fund
101 E. 7th Street
Davis, CA 95616

It is also possible to donate stock. This may result in tax benefits for the donor.
